See that dirt track above, veering away from the nicely paved road?
That’s a desire path.
It’s evidence that someone once stood on a boring, predictable, concrete road and said, “Fuck it, I’m gonna go my own way.”
I just love this idea.
I’ve spent a decade interviewing incredible business founders—currently as editorial director of Courier, and previously as the host of Monocle’s business podcast. I’ve met, grilled and talked with a *lot* of people over the years.
But for me, the most interesting are those whose lives and careers have the same spirit as that dirt track. They follow their passions, their interests, their gut, wherever it takes them. They manage a cafe in their 20s, fail at everything in their 30s, work on a farm in their 40s, launch a business in their 50s, get into carpentry in their 60s. They zig, zag, bend and sometimes go wildly off course. And they’re all the richer for it.
I’m launching Desire Paths to share these sorts of stories—amazing journeys, life lessons and wisdom from some of the more unconventional people I come across. (I’ll call these Paths).
This is also a personal newsletter, and I’ll share a lot of interesting stuff that doesn’t really fit in anywhere else. Photo series. Enlightening conversations. Snippets of ideas. Stuff on my radar. And a bunch of other stuff that sends me down a rabbit hole. (I’ll call these Diversions).
I’m really excited to get started.
